Many skincare products contain chemicals that Snowberry simply avoids. Here is a brief description of some and the reasons why.
Many cosmetics use a petroleum emulsifier base, or other petrochemicals to create artificial fragrances and colours. Studies have shown that many reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor, may lead to allergies, weaken cellular structure, and some commonly contain the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane (To avoid 1,4-dioxane, avoid names that include reference to ‘PEG,’ ‘polyethylene glycol,’ ‘propylene or butylene glycol,’ ‘xynol,’ ‘ceteareth,’ ‘and ‘oleth’).
Snowberry uses only natural plant oils for the base in all products, and is free of any petrochemical substance.
Parabens are the main preservatives in many cosmetics and skincare products. There are six commonly used forms – Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, p-Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben and Benzylparaben, which may represent up to 0.4% of the formulation. Although it is not clinically proven, parabens (some of which are naturally occurring in plants such as blueberries), have been linked in some studies to breast cancer. However, the FDA has concluded that at present, there is no reason for consumers to be concerned about the use of parabens in cosmetics.
Nevertheless, Snowberry does not use any parabens in its main product preservative system. A few individual ingredients in Snowberry products, have themselves incorporated parabens. This means that Snowberry products may contain traces of parabens, measurable to a few parts per million only.
Snowberry’s policy is to continue to search for alternative ingredients that use no parabens whatsoever.
Mineral oil silicones such as dimethicones and cyclomethicones are used as emollients to give a smooth and silky feel to skin products. Silicones are not readily absorbed by the skin and therefore tend to block pores and prevent the skin from breathing. They may also cause premature aging and skin irritation.
Snowberry uses no mineral oils or silicones and instead uses a range of natural herbal oils and gums.
Surfactants such as sodium and ammonium lauryl and laureth sulphates are strong detergents often used to create the foaming action in toners and cleansers but which dry out the skin and frequently cause irritation in sensitive skin. Some, such as TEA (Triethanolamine Laureth Sulphate) also contain potent carcinogens.
Snowberry uses only natural plant enzymes and saponins to create the soft foaming action in Snowberry Gentle Remineralising Toner.
Volatile alcohols such as Isopropyl are used to ‘cleanse,’ but in fact are dehydrating and irritating solvents that strip the skin’s natural mantle and protection of beneficial bacteria.
Snowberry uses no volatile alcohols and our cleanser formulations are designed to maintain ideal skin pH.
Dermal fillers are literally designed to ‘fill’ wrinkles to improve the apparent smoothness of skin. Dermal fillers tend to block skin pores and reduce the skin’s ability to breathe.
Snowberry uses only clinically proven ingredients that help skin cells to renew and rejuvenate. Snowberry uses no dermal fillers.
